Cerclage - Incompetence Cervix

Due to the last pregnancy, which KKH diagnosed as "Incompetence Cervix".
As a result, for this pregnancy, I had a cerclage done.

Cervical Cerclage (click on link to find out more)
It is commonly used to prevent and reduce the possibility of pre-mature birth and weak cervix.

As the article stated, it is simply sewing the cervix tight to prevent it from opening too early.

If one intend to go for natural birth, will need to remove the stitches 1-2 weeks earlier.
If one is going for cesarean birth, then the stitches is usually removed there and then.

Importantly to highlight this operation has its risk too. That is infection.
Which can be really serious if happen.

The stitches, after all is a foreign object in the body, thus administering antibiotics to prevent infection set in, is important.

Infection can cause the waterbag to burst. Waterbag once burst, will introduce infection and cause pre-term and death to the foetus.

In lieu of the risks and complication, weighing the possibility, i still went ahead as i really cannot bear the thought of going through another mid-term loss. (God forbids!)

Cerclage operation is best done by week 12/13, as the baby weight has yet pressured onto the cervix.

It is also preferably the cervix be long enough to ensure there's sufficient space for the sewing (imagine you are sewing tight your sleeve)

As my doctor @ KKH need to go for overseas conference during that 2 weeks, i had my cerclage done by Raffles Hospital.

In a way i'm glad i made this decision, as they are quite systematic and concerned about infection setting in thus focus a lot on administering antibiotics way before the operation, and after the operation.

Of course, the cost... I will go into that later on.

Was warded on Wednesday at 8am. the operation is scheduled at 6pm.
Warded early to be put on antibiotic drip, to ensure there's at least 2 cycles of 2 type of antibiotics drip.

one type of antibiotics is administered every 6 hours, the other every 8 hours.
So that's 9 bottles of antibiotics a day!

Yes, does feel assuring.

From 12pm onwards, fasting thus no food and drink... Luckily Eben is there to distract me and accompany me throughout.

The operation was done by Dr Tony Tan and my doctor, Dr Lee I-Wuen.
I would suppose quite fast, just that I'm under GA, thus was quite wobbly when they pushed me back to my bed around 7plus pm.

So tired and uncomfortable (because of the urine catheter!!!) that i didn't have my late dinner.

As the risk is infection, i stayed warded for 2 more days.
Only discharged on Friday.

But it is important so despite wanting to save cost, i just stay one more night.
